New Medicare Speech Generating Device Policy

As of 7/30/2015, SGD capped rental to end 10/1/2015

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a final revised National Coverage Determination on July 29, 2015 for speech generating devices (SGDs), which lays out the funding criteria for these devices. Click here for the memorandum. (Scroll down for the "Final Decision Memorandum.")

The Steve Gleason Act (H.R. 1919, S.984) was signed into law by President Barack Obama on July 20, 2015. This legislation, which received bipartisan support, allows for the immediate purchase and ownership for SGDs and removes these devices from CMS capped rental requirements as of 10/1/2015. It also clarifies Medicare coverage of eye-tracking technology and accessories. The act is named after Steve Gleason, a former NFL player, who is now battling ALS.
