WS33 - Using Shared Control to Enhance Powered Mobility Training Across the Lifespan

Session Information
Session ID:
Date & Time:
Thursday, June 29, 2017 - 2:45pm to 3:45pm
Session Description
Session Type:

Despite the documented benefits of powered mobility, children and adults with cognitive impairments are often denied the opportunity to practice powered mobility skills due to safety concerns. Use of a remote teleoperation control unit, which allows clinicians to “share” control of the powered mobility device without having to stop or interrupt the individual driving, improves safety and potentially enhances learning in this diverse population. Patient cases will illustrate the use of shared control to facilitate the development of cause and effect skills, decrease frustration and anxiety, and promote error-minimized learning in individuals across the lifespan.
