Many manual wheelchair users require the assistance of caregivers to safely and effectively manage obstacles in their everyday lives. Unfortunately, there can be negative health impacts on caregivers. Although research evidence is beginning to accumulate on the caregiver role in general, the assessment and training of caregivers to assist in the performance of wheelchair skills have received little attention. The Wheelchair Skills Program (WSP) (www.wheelchairskillsprogram.ca) provides such protocols. This workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to observe and discuss a set of 23 caregiver skills including preferred techniques, assessment methods and training principles.
