Session Track: COG: Cognitive and Sensory Impairments
Abstract:
Intelligent assistive technologies can compensate for a range of cognitive deficits - from memory and sequencing to maintaining safety in the home. However, we often fail to consider the ethical implications of these technologies for the user and the individuals around them. In this workshop, we will review the principles of biomedical ethics, consider their application to intelligent assistive technologies in the context of cognitive impairment, and review several cases of existing technologies to assess the ethical questions that arise. This engaging workshop will use discussion and interactive technology to encourage participation of all attendees.
Learning Outcomes:
1. By the end of the session, participants will be able to define the four principles of biomedical ethics.
2. By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify three risks to privacy for the use of intelligent assistive technologies.
3. By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify three considerations for just and equitable access to intelligent assistive technologies.
