Session ID:
Date & Time:
Friday, July 13, 2018 - 8:00am to 9:00am
Potomac Room II, Ballroom Level
Session Description
Session Type:

In this session, participants will learn and discuss how dominant discourses of disability (medical vs. social model) impact the fields of rehabilitation engineering and design, and how these discourses shape our service delivery and education for rehabilitation engineers. Participants will explore how disability studies can inform assistive technology practice, and address ongoing issues of accessibility and underlying messages delivered within our professions about disability identity. Student and faculty experiences and outcomes will also be shared, highlighting the results of infusing disability studies principles into a pilot engineering design course, and co-instructing the course with needs experts from disability communities.
