Summary: 
 
For a person with limited vision, access to language is a largely solved problem. Though not as efficient as sight, print documents can be converted to spoken or tactile representations with little loss. Mathematics, however, is much more challenging. Screen readers can be easily confused by mathematical equations, ignoring superscripting, subscripting, and many non-English characters. Conveying the information of charts and graphs is also a challenge. This course will provide methods to produce accessible spreadsheets, graphs, tables, and equations.

  1. Participants will identify three barriers to mathematics access for users of alternative output technologies (e.g. screen readers)
  2. Participants will modify a spreadsheet to allow easier access by a screen reader.
  3. Participants will produce alternative text descriptions for two charts and two graphs that convey the information of that image
  4. Participants will produce valid MathML that correctly reproduces the structure of a complex mathematical equation.
