The Professional Standards Board (PSB) has updated the “in-service” training hours allowed for ATP renewal. Previously, ATPs could submit up to 3 in-service contact hours per year toward ATP renewals, for a total of 6 contact hours. That has now been increased to ten (10) in-service contact hours per renewal period. The ten hours may be earned at any point during the renewal period.
The PSB made this change due to the increasingly complex technology now included in many of today’s assistive technology products, including artificial intelligence, and the rapid pace of technology innovation.
An updated “in-service” training form is now available for download at this link and on the renewal information page of the RESNA website, and in the on-line renewal application.
RESNA-certified ATPs are required to renew their certification every two years to ensure that a commitment is made to keep knowledge and skills current through relevant work experience and ongoing education. In addition to documenting relevant work experience, ATPs must complete 20 hours of continuing education in assistive technology every renewal cycle. Continuing education can be done through in-person or on-line courses, seminars, and workshops. Those 20 hours of continuing education must include:
- A minimum of 1.00 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) from CEU Recognized Providers (10 hour minimum)
- Continuing Education Credits (CEC) or contact hours for remaining hours (10 hour maximum)
In-service training hours falls under the Continuing Education Credits (CEC) or contact hours.
This change takes effect immediately. For more information, or to ask questions, please email info@resna.org or call 202-367-1121.
