RESNA Cancels 2020 Annual Conference & Explores Virtual Options

Message From RESNA's President, Dr. Mary Ellen Buning on April 22, 2020

The RESNA Board of Directors has been monitoring the escalating global impact of COVID-19 (coronavirus) and its impact on our annual conference. After much review, dialogue with key stakeholders, consideration of all of RESNA’s responsibilities and considerable discussion, the Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 RESNA Annual Conference, July 7-10 in Arlington, Virginia.

As you can imagine, this decision was incredibly difficult. The RESNA Annual Conference continually provides a vital forum for assistive technology professionals from a wide variety of disciplines to exchange ideas about the latest innovations and research helping people with disabilities lead independent, healthy lives. For many of us, attending the conference was our first experience of being a part of the RESNA global community. However, with the ongoing spread of COVID-19 across the world, we felt that for the health and safety of our attendees the best course of action was to cancel.

On behalf the Board, I would like to thank Doug Gayton, Conference Chair, and his committee for their stellar work on putting together an amazing program for our 40th anniversary, and all of our volunteers who were preparing to share their expertise and best practices with colleagues through conference workshops.  We are looking into ways we can provide the key components of RESNA 2020 virtually, and we will provide more information as we have more to share. We also plan to continue to publish the conference proceedings of scientific papers. For now, please continue to “save the date” for the first week of July. We hope to be able to announce a virtual conference program and events in just a few weeks.

In the meantime, please check out and contribute to our COVID-19 resource page on the website and stay connected. Be ready for the next steps in our modified conference plans. We will meet again!

Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to RESNA at or by phone at +1-202-367-1121.

Best regards,

Mary Ellen Buning, PhD, OT, ATP/SMS, RESNA Fellow
President, RESNA Board of Directors
