Title: Eve, the Self-Balancing Personal Exoskeleton: Is It Right for Your Client?
Speakers: Krisopher Ferrara, PT, DPT
Abstract:
Personal exoskeletons have moved from the research lab into real-world home use, and Assistive Technology Professionals are increasingly the ones asked to determine whether this technology fits a given client. Eve, Wandercraft's self-balancing personal exoskeleton, enables individuals with lower-limb paralysis to stand and walk hands-free—without crutches or walkers—expanding what "mobility" can mean for the people ATPs serve every day.
This session is built for the ATP's decision-making lens. We'll walk through the clinical and functional candidacy criteria for Eve, how a personal exoskeleton complements rather than replaces a client's existing mobility ecosystem (including power and manual wheelchairs), and what a trial and evaluation process looks like in practice. We'll also address the questions ATPs most often raise: how Eve is coded and classified (HCPCS K1007), where it fits within device reimbursement pathways, and what documentation supports medical necessity and funding. Attendees will leave with a practical framework for identifying appropriate candidates, setting realistic client expectations, and positioning the technology within a defensible justification.

Presenter(s) Bio:

Krisopher Ferrara, PT, DPT
- Kristopher received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Thomas Jefferson University in 2021. His professional career includes significant experience in outpatient neurologic and orthopedic settings with a focus on patients’ post stroke through the continuum of the care process, as well as other neurodegenerative conditions at Jefferson Moss Magee Rehabilitation. He also has experience treating neurologic patients from the ICU to acute rehab settings. Kris has been involved in various research studies from looking at kinematics in patients with patellofemoral pain, to studies seeking expansion of FDA indications for robotic exoskeleton devices. Currently, he serves as a Clinical Specialist for Wandercraft, focusing on training, educating clinicians, and collecting data to enhance clinical outcomes.
Wandercraft:
Wandercraft was founded in Paris in 2012 to answer it, and the answer took a decade of engineering: an exoskeleton that balances itself, so the person inside doesn't have to. In 2019 Atalante became the first self-balancing walking exoskeleton to earn a CE mark in Europe.
That same technology now carries people through rehabilitation at more than 150 clinical and research sites, is moving out of the clinic and into the home with Eve, and stands inside Calvin, our family of humanoid robots built for the heaviest work in industry. Three products, two markets, one conviction — robotics should help people do what they can't.
