Title: AI at Tobii Dynavox: From Foundational Innovation to User‑Informed and Ethical Futures in AAC

Abstract:
This session explores the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) in AAC at Tobii Dynavox, from foundational machine learning applications to emerging generative AI capabilities. Drawing on findings from a recent exploratory study with experienced eye‑gaze AAC users, we examine the real‑world benefits, limitations, and impact of AI on communication, including considerations of accuracy, cognitive load, trust, and user control. We highlight how individuals have long been using AI‑driven tools and emphasize the importance of clearly defined, user‑centered use cases. The session also provides guidance on when and how to apply AI in AAC ethically and thoughtfully to support authentic, effective communication.

Zoe Kalligiannis
Zoe Kalligiannis is a Global Product Manager at Tobii Dynavox, based in Stockholm, with responsibility for a portfolio of global communication software products within Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Drawing on a background in occupational therapy and a special interest in neurorehabilitation, she works at the intersection of product strategy, user research, and technology, partnering closely with engineering, design, clinicians, and commercial teams to deliver accessible, scalable solutions for individuals with complex communication needs, including ALS, cerebral palsy, and autism.
Over the past several years, Zoe has led product evolution across both mature and emerging software platforms, balancing roadmap execution, legacy product transitions, and the introduction of AI-enabled capabilities such as predictive language, voice technologies, and context-aware communication support. Her clinical background informs a strong user- and clinician-centered approach to product development, helping ensure that technological innovation translates into meaningful outcomes for the people who rely on AAC every day.
Zoe is particularly passionate about personalization, communication efficiency, and preserving identity through AAC, as well as harnessing emerging technologies responsibly to empower authentic self-expression. She regularly contributes to cross-functional strategy, research initiatives, and professional-facing communications, and is deeply engaged in shaping the future of accessible communication technology.
Patrick Brune
Patrick Brune is a Speech-Language Pathologist with more than 30 years of experience providing AAC assessment, intervention, and consultation services to children and adults with complex speech and language disabilities across a variety of settings. As a Senior Learning Consultant with the Tobii Dynavox Learning Team, Patrick develops and delivers training for internal teams and customers, creates practical resources to support successful AAC implementation, and presents on augmentative and alternative communication at conferences and professional events. His extensive clinical experience and passion for AAC implementation inform his work to help professionals, individuals, and families achieve meaningful communication outcomes.
