RESNA’s Wheeled Mobility SIG Position Paper Posted for 30-day Comment Period

RESNA and Clinician Task Force (CTF) members have posted a draft position paper,  the “RESNA and CTF Position on the Application of Supported Standing Devices: Current State of the Literature” for the required 30-day public comment period.

Please review this work that aimed to update the “RESNA Application of Wheelchair Standing Devices”.  Work on this updated position paper began in 2019 led by Lorri Bernhardt, Chair of the RESNA Wheeled Mobility SIG. The RESNA Board approved it to be the first joint RESNA and CTF position paper. During the pandemic, Lorri transitioned leadership to Cara Masselink, who completed the scoping review and resulting manuscript with Ashley Detterbeck, Nicole LaBerge, and Ginny Paleg.

This paper describes the results of a rigorous scoping review, analyzing results through an International Classification of Function (ICF) lens, with the goal of producing a position paper explaining the impact of supported standing in a variety of devices. Due to an urgent advocacy opportunity, we are shortening the public review period to 30 days. Members of the RESNA Wheeled Mobility SIG have already done a review, and those comments are incorporated in this draft.

We appreciate your review of this paper. Please forward comments to Cara Masselink at cara.masselink@wmich.edu.

A RESNA Position Paper is an official statement by the organization that, based on the consensus of experts and evidence summarizes current research and best-practice trends in relevant areas of Assistive Technology. RESNA position papers undergo a rigorous process of development, review and approval.
