Each year, RESNA recognizes a scholar and leader who has made substantial and innovative contributions to the field of rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology through research, education, and/or practice through the Colin McLaurin Distinguished Lectureship Award.

Join RESNA President Dr. Carmen DiGiovine for an engaging fireside chat with Dr. Rory Cooper, a visionary leader, coach, mentor, and the founder of HERL Labs. Dr. Cooper will take you on a remarkable journey, sharing insights into his inspiring life story, the founding of HERL Labs, his groundbreaking inventions, and his visionary outlook on the future of assistive technology.

During this fireside chat, Dr. Cooper will highlight the pivotal moments and invaluable lessons that have shaped his remarkable career and share the driving forces that ignited his passion for innovation and his relentless pursuit of creating solutions to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities. Learn his vision for the future as he discusses the evolving landscape of assistive technology, offering a glimpse into the incredible possibilities that he believes lie ahead.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will be able to identify the three areas of assistive technology in which HERL holds patents.
  2. Students will be able to identify 2 patented technologies of Dr. Cooper’s and explain their importance.
  3. Students will be able to identify at least 3 different experiences and inspirations that have driven Dr. Cooper’s passion for success and innovation in the field.

The fireside chat will take place on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 3pm Eastern at the O'Hara Ballroom at the University of Pittsburgh. Attendance is welcome both in-person and virtually via Zoom.

Meet Dr. Cooper

This is a headshot of Dr. Rory Cooper. Dr. Cooper is a Caucasian male with short brown hair, he is wearing a jacket and tie, and is smiling in the photo.

Dr. Rory Cooper is the founder, director, and CEO of the Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL), a joint venture of the University of Pittsburgh, the US Department of Veterans Affairs and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Cooper also serves as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research for STEM and Health Sciences Collaboration and FISA/PVA Distinguished Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology at the University of Pittsburgh.  He is also Professor in the Bioengineering, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Orthopaedic Surgery departments at the University of Pittsburgh, and holds adjunct professorships at the Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University and the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He was awarded an Honorary Professorship at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and an Honorary Doctorate at Xi’an Jiatong University in Xi'an, China. He has dedicated his career to improving mobility, function, and quality of life for people with disabilities through advanced engineering in clinical research and medical rehabilitation.
