What are robotics wheelchairs? Trends and design considerations to enhance assistive mobility technology

Date: Thursday, June 1, 2023 - Thursday, June 1, 2023
Location: Zoom via RESNA Learn

Time: 12:00 - 1:00 pm EST
Speaker: Jorge Candiotti

Abstract: Tips and falls are one of the most recurrent wheelchair accidents when navigating on challenging terrains or overlooked obstacles. Existing electric-powered wheelchairs are not designed for such environments, predisposing them to loss of stability. Advances in sensing technology have enabled researchers to design robotic wheelchairs to enhance safety and mobility. This work will propose design recommendations and evaluation tools for robotic wheelchairs to meet users’ functional needs. The design framework will be illustrated by describing the design and evaluation process of a robotic wheelchair prototype with all-terrain capabilities, followed by a discussion of potential design considerations for advanced wheelchairs

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to identify at least three design recommendations for robotic wheelchairs

  • Participants will be able to describe standardized metrics to evaluate robotic wheelchairs

Presenter Bio:

Jorge Candiotti is a Research Biomedical Engineer at the US Department of Veterans Affairs and an Adjunct Professor at the Bioengineering Department, University of Pittsburgh. He runs a reading group that discusses peer-reviewed articles on the field of assistive technology. His research interests include assistive mobility robots, obstacle navigation, and human-robot interaction. His research has been presented at conferences related to assistive technology (i.e. RESNA, PVA, ISS)
