RESNA Strategic Plan 2019-2023

Adopted by the Board of Directors on Febrary 6, 2019

RESNA’s five-year strategic plan reflects our vision to be the leading source of knowledge and leadership in Rehabilitation Engineering (RE) and Assistive Technology (AT) in North America and around the world.

Our mission is to promote the health and well-being of people with disabilities, and those who are aging, through technology solutions.

Our priority goals for the next five years are:

Goal I:   Advance the professional and educational development of RESNA members, students, and others in the field.

To achieve this goal, RESNA will:

  1. Maintain and grow our certification programs, especially the current credentials offered
  2. Increase the quantity and quality of educational offerings
  3. Expand the accreditation program for colleges and universities offering training in AT

Goal II:  Increase RESNA’s value to members and potential members

To achieve this goal, RESNA will:

  1. Identify, assess and address areas of practice where RESNA needs to increase its presence and engagement
  2. Improve communications and customer service to members and prospective members with an emphasis on knowledge sharing
  3. Engage in targeted outreach to key constituencies to encourage engagement with RESNA
  4. Continue to solicit member and potential member input to inform our programming
  5. Increase public policy advocacy efforts and communicate these regularly to membership
  6. Strategically plan RESNA’s conference approach.

Goal III:  Raise our profile in the field and position RESNA as a credible leader and expert resource

To achieve this goal, RESNA will:

  1. Initiate and lead public policy advocacy efforts and communicate these regularly to membership
  2. Continue to take leadership roles in coalitions and engage partners of mutual interest
  3. Strengthen relationships with international organizations
  4. Promote our work on Standards and continue to influence International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
  5. Develop and promote a corps of RESNA member subject matter experts to present at conferences, other meetings and events

Goal IV:  Pursue new financial resources to strengthen the Society while benefitting the field.

To achieve this goal, RESNA will:

  1. Promote RESNA as a partner to entities seeking sponsored funding in Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology research, development, and service delivery
  2. Identify and pursue opportunities for RESNA to lead grant projects that leverage and grow existing RESNA programs and, in some cases, fund new programs that expand RESNA’s capacity in the field
  3. Identify and approach private funders with proposals that align with RESNA’s mission and capabilities
  4. Strategically plan RESNA’s conference approach

Goal V:  Strengthen RESNA’s role in AT/RE research and knowledge translation

To achieve this goal, RESNA will:

  1. Develop and provide a channel between researchers, practitioners, and people with disabilities
  2. Promote the dissemination and knowledge translation of research and standards
  3. Advocate for increased support for research
  4. Strengthen the quality, importance and relevance of the AT Journal
