Abstract
Currently air travel for powered wheelchair users can be a nightmare. Each air carrier has their own list of information they collect from the passenger and the procedures vary for preparing, loading and unloading Assistive Technology for Mobility – ATFM. Most powered wheelchairs were never designed to withstand the rigors of air travel. This session will review a new draft RESNA standard that will address these problems. The goal is to streamline the travel process for mobility device users and reduce the damage that often occurs. Desirable mobility device features for air travel will be presented.
Learning Outcomes
- Participants will be able to list the type of information that air carriers need to know about their mobility technology for safely transport it
- Participants will be able to describe how to prepare a powered mobility device for air travel in the jetway.
- Participants will be able to describe how a powered wheelchair is taken from the jetway and loaded into an aircraft.
- Participants will be able to list the most important design features a powered wheelchair must have for air travel.
- Participants will be able to describe the content of an Air Travel Information card that must be attached to a wheelchair for air travel
