How did the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) first become involved with RESNA?
NMEDA’s involvement with RESNA goes back many years. Our organizations have been partners for longer than most can remember, united in a shared commitment to expanding opportunities and safety for people with disabilities, particularly where assistive technology professionals and mobility equipment dealers intersect. Our relationship strengthened in 2016 and 2017 when we got the Veterans Mobility Safety Act passed, bringing NMEDA into key national conversations about mobility and safety. It highlighted how RESNA’s assistive technology expertise and NMEDA’s focus on vehicle modifications naturally complement one another.
We support RESNA’s mission because our goals align. Both of our organizations are committed to improving the well-being of people with disabilities through technology, and our partnership helps ensure AT professionals can better serve their communities.
Can you share a bit about your organization’s background and how your work aligns with RESNA’s mission and values?
For more than 30 years, NMEDA has played a key role in advancing safe, accessible transportation across the US and Canada. What began in 1989 as a small group of mobility dealers has grown into a national community focused on helping people travel safely, confidently, and independently. As a 501(c)(6) trade association, we support dealers, manufacturers, and industry partners and serve as the certifying body for the Quality Assurance Program, which elevates safety and consistency in accessible vehicle modifications. We also provide education, training, and advocacy to strengthen professional standards across the automobility field.
Our mission centers on delivering safe, reliable accessible transportation, and that commitment mirrors RESNA’s dedication to maximizing the well-being of people with disabilities through technology. Together, we share a belief in the power of standards-driven, client-centered solutions to improve quality of life, and we’re proud to collaborate with RESNA to support the future of mobility and accessibility.
Are there any upcoming projects, initiatives, or collaborations you’re excited about that you’d like to share with the RESNA community?
We have two initiatives we’re excited to share with the RESNA community. At our 2026 NMEDA Conference & Expo, we’re offering dedicated Pre Conference Sessions for Allied Health Professionals on February 19–20. This two-day program is designed for clinicians, therapists, ATPs, driver rehabilitation specialists, and anyone supporting clients with automotive mobility needs. Through hands on education, product application, and direct collaboration with industry experts, attendees will deepen their understanding of adaptive driving equipment, emerging technology, and best practices that directly impact client outcomes. CEU approval is currently pending. Details can be found at this link.
We’re also preparing for National Mobility Awareness Month in May, a nationwide campaign that celebrates mobility independence and builds public understanding of accessible transportation. Both efforts reflect our shared goals with RESNA, advancing standards, elevating best practices, and creating more pathways to safe, reliable mobility for the disability community. We’re looking forward to continued collaboration and connection with RESNA members throughout the year.
