Session Track: Improving Patient Outcomes
Abstract: Assistive Technology (AT) has the power to transform lives by increasing independence and safety, enhancing communication, supporting learning, and enabling full participation in everyday life. But how do you get this life-changing technology? Where are the hidden resources in our communities? For over 30 years, across the United States and its territories, the Assistive Technology Act Programs have served as a critical resource in assistive technology access and acquisition. Yet many people are unaware of their services exist! This session will highlight • The core services of Assistive Technology Act Programs • Eligibility (hint-it’s everyone) • Make-up of the AT Act Program • Delivery differences between programs Real-world success stories from state AT programs will illustrate the practical, person-centered impact of these services. From students using AAC devices in inclusive classrooms, to older adults aging in place with smart home technology, to workers using innovative solutions to get back on the job, the stories shared will spotlight the human side of AT access. The session will also explore how AT Act programs innovate to address emerging needs—such as telehealth, remote monitoring, centers, 3D maker movements, gaming programs, full AT assessments (FFS), partnering with underserved communities, and evaluating cutting-edge technologies. Attendees will leave with practical insights, new ideas, and a deeper appreciation of how the AT Act Programs, through these initiatives, bridge the gap between need and access, especially for those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from assistive technology.Whether you're a person with a disability, educator, service provider, or family member, this session will provide valuable tools and perspectives for leveraging AT Act Programs to expand access, promote equity, and empower people with disabilities in every facet of life.
