In 2013, the RESNA Emergency Stair Travel Devices (ESTD) Committee published the ANSI/RESNA ED-1 standard for Evacuation Stair Travel Devices, the first performance standard for these devices, covering weight capacity, stability, and maneuverability. This standard was updated and published in 2019. We have completed revisions to ED-1, and a draft version will be available for public review until March 23rd, 2026. The following Public Review announcement will appear in ANSI Standards Action on 2/6/2026.
This standard covers the terminology, description, performance, inspection, and maintenance of devices whose primary purpose is the travel of individuals with disabilities over stair and horizontal surfaces during building evacuations. This standard does not cover devices whose purpose is the travel of individuals with disabilities during routine travel on stairs. This standard includes requirements and test methods for determining emergency stair travel device performance. It also includes requirements for the disclosure of the test results.
