ALS is a neurodegenerative disease process which often necessitates power wheelchair use. The progressive disease process affects a user’s function and ability to control their power wheelchair over time with the traditional power wheelchair joystick drive input. This course will look at modifications to the standard joystick set-up and the options for alternative drive control inputs for users with ALS to maximize their independence with driving and control of their power wheelchair with disease progression over time. Alternative drive input methods presented are also applicable for all power wheelchair users depending on their functional abilities.
