It is estimated that up to 91% of wheelchair users can benefit from "smart" wheelchair technology (Simpson, 2008). This session will present "smart" wheelchair research and clinical evidence generated over several decades, including a recent study conducted with blind spot sensors for wheelchairs. It will also provide participants with an opportunity to experience blind spot sensor technology in various scenarios. Finally a discussion will be conducted, drawing from literature on both "smart" wheelchairs and the automotive industry (driver assistance systems and self-driving cars) to explore usability issues, safety standards, and ethical considerations as new sensor technologies continue to be developed.
