Special Issue Title: Assistive Technology Outcome Measures: Are we being left behind

Important Dates:

           Abstract due March 15th, 2022

Invitations for full papers to authors March 31st 2022

Full papers due December 31st, 2022

Special Issue Description:

The measurement of the outcomes and impacts of assistive technology, including the products, services, systems, and policies required to deliver them, is critical to understanding the benefit of assistive technology, and developing relevant and necessary policies and systems to support their delivery. To effectively measure these outcomes and impacts, we require measures which are developed using sound methods, are contextually relevant, and demonstrate evidence of validity and reliability for the population they will be used for.

This special issue will publish papers which focus on the development of new AT outcome measures, and the reliability and validity of new or existing measures, including cross-cultural adaptations and translations of existing measures. We are also interested in papers describing the uptake and/or implementation of outcome measures in clinical or other settings, as well as descriptions of the use of tools to evaluate the impact of policies and systems, and systematic reviews of existing outcome measures for specific areas of assistive technology.

Abstract Submission

Abstracts should be no more than 350 words and include the headers Background, Objective, Methods, and Potential Impact. Please also include a statement to describe where you are in your research process (i.e. conceptualization, data collected and/or analyzed, research complete etc.).

The Assistive Technology supports and promotes the meaningful inclusion of assistive technology users in research. Authors should include a statement indicating how assistive technology users have been, or will be, involved in the research.

Abstracts should be submitted to journaleditor@resna.org by March 15th, 2022. You are welcome to submit prior to then, however abstracts will not be reviewed until after that date. Abstracts will be reviewed by the special issue editors and selected papers will be invited for full submission. With limited space available in the special issue, we will be selecting papers based not only on their quality, but also on the breadth of topics covered across the range of papers accepted. Abstracts which are of sufficient quality, but are not invited for full submission for the special issue may be invited to submit to a standard issue of the journal.

Full Paper Submission

Full papers should comply with the guidelines in the Instructions for Authors (Submit to Assistive Technology) through the Manuscript Central submission system. There will be two primary options:

1)    Research Papers: These have a word limit of 3500 words (excluding tables and figures) and are intended for longer descriptions of outcome measure development, or the extensive evaluation of reliability and validity.

2)    Outcome Measures: These are brief reports (suggested 1500 words, excluding tables or figures) which report on psychometric properties of a new or existing outcome measure. These would be well suited to the evaluation of validity or reliability of a new or existing outcome measure.

If you have any questions about the guidelines, or anticipate you will exceed the suggested guidelines for wordcount, tables, or figures, please email the Editor in Chief at journaleditor@resna.org for guidance.
